Managing Chronic Conditions

Having a pre-existing condition does NOT mean you cannot get affordable life insurance. The key word is "Control". Insurers want to see that you are managing your health responsibly.

Common Conditions & Ratings

High Blood Pressure

If your BP is well-controlled with medication and remains stable (e.g., 130/80), you can still qualify for "Preferred" rates. Taking medication is NOT a disqualifier; uncontrolled BP is.

Type 2 Diabetes

If diagnosed later in life (after 50) and controlled with oral medication (A1C under 7.0), you may get "Standard" rates. Insulin dependence or early onset usually leads to higher premiums ("Rated" policies).

Anxiety & Depression

Mild to moderate cases managed with standard medication often qualify for "Standard" or even "Preferred" rates. A history of hospitalization or suicide attempts will make approval difficult.

Sleep Apnea

If you use a CPAP machine regularly and have compliance logs to prove it, you can get excellent rates. Untreated sleep apnea is a major red flag.

The "Clinical Underwriter" Role

Before you apply, it is wise to have your agent speak to a clinical underwriter anonymously. They can "shop" your specific medical profile to multiple carriers to see who will view your condition most favorably.
