How we ranked the companies
This is a LIFE.YOU editorial ranking, not a list sorted by company size or advertising relationship. We scored financial strength at 30 percent, policy and product breadth at 25 percent, customer experience at 20 percent, access and underwriting paths at 10 percent, U.S. individual-life scale at 10 percent, and public transparency plus policyholder alignment at 5 percent. The weights favor a company that can support a long contract and serve several common buyer profiles. Before treating any ranked company as the right fit, use the life insurance company due-diligence checklist and verify the exact legal issuer.
Financial-strength grades came from current AM Best disclosures. Customer experience uses the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study, the latest published study available during this review. Scale uses the NAIC 2024 countrywide life-premium report. Product facts came from insurer materials. Scores are our synthesis of those inputs, not a rating issued by AM Best, J.D. Power or the NAIC.
We did not publish one company-wide complaint number. Complaint records belong to specific legal issuing entities and can differ by state and product. The NAIC advises shoppers to compare complaints, financials and direct premiums, and not to use one factor alone. Before buying, look up the exact company name and NAIC number printed on the proposal.
Points to compare
- No insurer paid for inclusion, placement or a higher score.
- We did not score price because no one carrier is cheapest for every age, health history, state and policy design.
- A score difference of one or two points is not a prediction that one applicant will receive a better offer.
- Availability, underwriting and policy features can vary by state and issuing company.
Our #1 recommendation
MassMutual
Best overall
- Best for
- A strong all-around choice with term and permanent coverage
- AM Best
- A++
- J.D. Power 2025
- 671, above the 650 study average
- Policy range
- Term, whole, universal and variable universal life
MassMutual takes our top position because it combines an A++ AM Best financial-strength rating with a broad individual-life lineup and meaningful national scale. Its public comparison materials cover term, whole life, universal life and variable universal life, so a shopper can keep more policy structures inside one financially strong mutual company.
MassMutual scored 671 in the 2025 J.D. Power study, above the 650 study average but behind several companies below it in our ranking. We accepted that tradeoff because financial strength and contract breadth carry more weight than a single year of customer survey results. Its agent-led process can also be less convenient for buyers seeking a fully online purchase.
Watch for
Agent-led purchasing and non-guaranteed illustration values
Compare against
Northwestern Mutual, New York Life and an independent term quote
Our #2 recommendation
Northwestern Mutual
Best for financial strength and participating whole life
- Best for
- Buyers prioritizing financial strength and participating whole life
- AM Best
- A++
- J.D. Power 2025
- 677
- Policy range
- Term, whole, universal and variable universal life
Northwestern Mutual pairs an A++ AM Best rating with the largest share of U.S. life premiums in the NAIC 2024 report. Its lineup includes term, whole life, universal life and variable universal life, and eligible term policies can provide a route to permanent coverage through conversion.
The company scored 677 in the 2025 J.D. Power study. Its main limitation is access: the buying experience is centered on its financial representatives, so it is harder to separate a product comparison from the broader advisory relationship. Buyers should request a clean guaranteed and non-guaranteed breakdown and compare the same death benefit elsewhere.
Watch for
Advisor-led distribution and non-guaranteed dividend assumptions
Compare against
MassMutual and New York Life
Our #3 recommendation
Mutual of Omaha
Best customer experience
- Best for
- Buyers who value service experience and straightforward access
- AM Best
- A+ for United of Omaha, a principal group issuer
- J.D. Power 2025
- 707, highest in the 2025 study
- Policy range
- Term, whole and universal life
Mutual of Omaha ranks third because it led the 2025 J.D. Power individual-life study with a score of 707. Its consumer lineup spans term, whole life and universal life, giving buyers more than one path instead of forcing every need into a single product category. United of Omaha, a principal life issuer in the group, carries an A+ AM Best rating.
Its A+ rating is one notch below the A++ companies at the top of this list, and its 2024 NAIC life-premium share was smaller. Those factors keep it from first place, but its service result and approachable product menu make it a strong shortlist choice, particularly for buyers who value a less specialized purchase path.
Watch for
Confirm the exact Mutual of Omaha group company issuing the policy
Compare against
State Farm, Nationwide and MassMutual
Our #4 recommendation
Nationwide
Best balance of service and product choice
- Best for
- A large national insurer with strong service results and broad choice
- AM Best
- A+ for the life company
- J.D. Power 2025
- 695, third in the 2025 study
- Policy range
- Term and multiple permanent life structures
Nationwide combines an A+ life-company financial-strength rating with a 695 J.D. Power score, third in the 2025 study. The group ranked seventh in the NAIC 2024 countrywide life-premium report. That blend of scale, service and term plus permanent coverage gives Nationwide one of the most balanced profiles in our review.
Product availability and distribution can vary, so buyers should confirm the legal issuer, state availability and whether the proposal is designed mainly for protection or cash-value accumulation. Variable and indexed products need more illustration review than a simple level-term contract.
Watch for
State availability and the assumptions inside complex universal-life designs
Compare against
Mutual of Omaha and State Farm
Our #5 recommendation
New York Life
Best conservative permanent-insurance shortlist
- Best for
- Whole life and long-duration coverage from a highly rated mutual insurer
- AM Best
- A++
- J.D. Power 2025
- 656
- Policy range
- Term, whole, universal and variable universal life
New York Life earns fifth place with an A++ AM Best rating and the third-largest share of U.S. life premiums in the NAIC 2024 report. Its official lineup includes term, whole life, universal life and variable universal life. That makes it especially relevant for shoppers who want to compare participating whole life or long-duration coverage inside a large mutual insurer.
Its J.D. Power score of 656 was only modestly above the study average, and purchasing is primarily agent-led. Those factors reduce its access and customer-experience points. The company can still be the best fit when contract guarantees and permanent-policy design matter more than a fast digital process.
Watch for
Agent-led purchasing and non-guaranteed dividends
Compare against
MassMutual, Northwestern Mutual and Guardian
Our #6 recommendation
Guardian
Best whole-life option with a strong service record
- Best for
- A whole-life shortlist where financial strength and service both matter
- AM Best
- A++
- J.D. Power 2025
- 679
- Policy range
- Term, whole and universal life
Guardian combines an A++ AM Best rating with a 679 score in the 2025 J.D. Power study, higher than the four companies above it except Mutual of Omaha and Nationwide. Its consumer materials cover term, whole life and universal life, and the group ranked eleventh in the NAIC 2024 life-premium report.
Guardian lands below New York Life because its national individual-life scale and publicly visible breadth are somewhat narrower for this general-purpose ranking. It remains a serious candidate for participating whole life and for buyers who want both strong financial credentials and an above-average service result.
Watch for
Keep guaranteed cash values separate from dividend illustrations
Compare against
New York Life, MassMutual and Northwestern Mutual
Our #7 recommendation
State Farm
Best local-agent experience
- Best for
- Buyers who want a named local agent and strong service results
- AM Best
- A+ after the November 2025 AM Best action
- J.D. Power 2025
- 697, second in the 2025 study
- Policy range
- Term, whole and universal life
State Farm ranked second in the 2025 J.D. Power study with a score of 697 and supports a large local-agent network. It offers term, whole and universal life options. That combination makes it a practical choice for buyers who want a named local contact and a simpler relationship than a broader wealth-management engagement.
AM Best lowered State Farm Life Insurance Company and its New York and Wisconsin affiliate from A++ to A+ with a stable outlook in November 2025. A+ remains a strong grade, but we use the current rating rather than the older A++ still shown in some State Farm material. State Farm Life Insurance Company is not licensed in Massachusetts, New York or Wisconsin; a separate affiliate serves New York and Wisconsin.
Watch for
Issuer and product availability vary by state
Compare against
Mutual of Omaha and Nationwide
Our #8 recommendation
Pacific Life
Best for advanced universal-life comparisons
- Best for
- Informed buyers comparing guaranteed, indexed or variable universal life
- AM Best
- A+
- J.D. Power 2025
- 652
- Policy range
- Term, universal, guaranteed universal, indexed universal and variable universal life
Pacific Life earns a place for buyers who need deeper permanent-policy choice. Its product explorer includes term, universal life, guaranteed universal life, indexed universal life and variable universal life. The company carries an A+ AM Best rating and ranked twelfth in the NAIC 2024 life-premium report.
Its 652 J.D. Power score was close to the study average. More importantly, many of its distinguishing products involve assumptions, crediting rules, charges or investment risk that require careful review. Pacific Life can be a strong specialist option, but it is not our first general recommendation for a buyer who only needs simple level-term protection.
Watch for
Crediting rules, charges, loans, investment risk and lapse risk
Compare against
Penn Mutual, Prudential and a simple term alternative
Our #9 recommendation
Penn Mutual
Best smaller mutual-company product range
- Best for
- Buyers seeking a mutual insurer with a broad permanent-policy menu
- AM Best
- A+
- J.D. Power 2025
- 651
- Policy range
- Term, whole, universal, indexed universal and variable universal life
Penn Mutual carries an A+ AM Best rating and publishes a broad lineup covering term, whole life, universal life, indexed universal life and variable universal life. It ranked eighteenth in the NAIC 2024 life-premium report and scored 651 in the 2025 J.D. Power study.
The breadth is appealing, especially for buyers who want to compare permanent structures within a mutual company, but its smaller scale and near-average service score place it below the larger all-around choices. As with any complex permanent policy, the exact illustration and issuing entity matter more than the brand name alone.
Watch for
Request lower-assumption illustrations and clear conversion provisions
Compare against
Pacific Life, Guardian and MassMutual
Our #10 recommendation
Prudential
Best for scale and specialized case review
- Best for
- Cases with a specific Prudential underwriting or product advantage
- AM Best
- A+
- J.D. Power 2025
- 650, matching the 2025 study average
- Policy range
- Term and universal-life structures
Prudential remains in our top ten because it carries an A+ AM Best rating and ranked fourth in the NAIC 2024 life-premium report. Its individual-life materials include term and universal-life structures, and its scale can make it relevant for cases that need a large, experienced underwriting organization.
Its 650 J.D. Power score matched the 2025 study average. The company structure and product menu can be harder for a consumer to navigate, and the strongest use case may depend on a specific underwriting or policy need rather than broad simplicity. That is why Prudential is a company to quote and compare, not an automatic first choice.
Watch for
Confirm the issuer, guarantee period and every non-guaranteed assumption
Compare against
At least two higher-ranked companies using the same coverage design
How to turn the ranking into a buying decision
Start with the financial job and policy type, not the company name. A healthy applicant seeking 20-year term insurance should not choose a costly permanent policy merely because the carrier ranks first overall. Likewise, someone with a documented lifetime estate-liquidity need should not treat the lowest initial term premium as the whole decision.
Obtain comparable proposals from at least three financially strong insurers. Match the death benefit, level period, premium guarantee, payment mode and riders. Compare the final offered underwriting class, not the class used in an early estimate. For permanent coverage, put guaranteed values and non-guaranteed values in separate columns and stress-test lower crediting, dividends or investment performance.
Finally, verify the exact issuing company through your state insurance department or the NAIC Consumer Insurance Search. Check licensing, current financial-strength ratings and complaint history for that legal entity. Keep existing coverage in force until any replacement policy has been issued, accepted and confirmed active.
Points to compare
- Shortlist three companies based on the policy type and purchase experience you need.
- Request equal coverage designs and annual premium totals.
- Verify the exact issuer and NAIC company number.
- Read the specimen policy, illustration and conversion provisions.
- Choose the sustainable contract, even if the company is not ranked first overall.
Questions about 10 best life insurance companies for 2026
Use these answers to keep unlike options from being treated as equivalent.
What is the best life insurance company for 2026?
MassMutual is LIFE.YOU's best overall company for 2026 because it combines an A++ AM Best rating, broad term and permanent product choice, national scale and above-average customer satisfaction. A different insurer can still produce the better contract or underwriting result for one applicant.
Did any insurer pay to appear in this ranking?
No. No insurer paid for inclusion, placement or a higher score, and LIFE.YOU does not sell ranking positions.
Why is the cheapest company not ranked first?
Life insurance prices depend on age, health, state, coverage and underwriting. No company is cheapest for everyone, so this ranking does not invent a universal price winner. Compare final offers with matching coverage terms.
How often will this ranking be reviewed?
We review the evidence when a major rating, product or regulatory change occurs and conduct a full scheduled review at least annually. The reviewed date on the page shows the current edition.
