Acing the Medical Exam
The medical exam is the "moment of truth" for your application. A nurse will come to your home or office (paid for by the insurer) to verify your health.
What Happens During the Exam?
The visit typically takes 20 to 30 minutes. You should expect:
- Vitals Check: Height, weight, blood pressure, and pulse.
- Samples: Blood draw (to check cholesterol, glucose, liver/kidney function) and a urine sample (for nicotine, drugs, and protein).
- Questions: Confirmation of your medical history, prescriptions, and family history.
4 Tips to Ace Your Exam
1. Fast for 12 Hours
Schedule the exam for the morning. Food can spike your blood sugar and triglycerides, making you look less healthy than you are.
2. Avoid Caffeine
Coffee and energy drinks raise your blood pressure and heart rate. Stick to water on the morning of the exam.
3. Skip the Gym
Heavy exercise 24 hours before can release protein into your urine, which might trigger a false positive for kidney issues.
4. Drink Water
Being hydrated makes it easier to draw blood and keeps your veins dilated.
🔎 Pro Tip: Ask for Your Results
You are entitled to a free copy of your lab results. This is essentially a free, comprehensive health checkup. Ask the examiner or your agent to send them to you.
